IMRT/IGRT
Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) is an advanced form of 3D conformal therapy delivered by a linear accelerator. The device is computer-driven and delivers radiation doses to select parts of the body with incredible precision as it moves around the patient. In addition to shaping the beams and aiming them at the tumors from several angles, the intensity (strength) of the beams can be adjusted to minimize the dose reaching normal tissue and organs while allowing the doctor to deliver an even higher dose to the treatment areas. With this technology, tumors can be targeted aggressively while minimizing risk to normal tissues and organs.
Image-guided IMRT (IGRT) has substantially improved the results of this treatment. Backed by years of research, this technology integrates imaging and detection components into a state-of-the-art linear accelerator, allowing clinicians to plan treatment, verify positioning, and deliver treatment with a single device. This means faster, more effective radiation therapy with less damage to healthy tissue.
IGRT captures CT, fluoroscopic and x-ray images on a daily basis, creating three-dimensional images that pinpoint the exact size, location and coordinates of tumors. Once tumors are pinpointed, the system delivers ultra-precise doses of radiation – ultimately leading to improved cure rates.
